There’s not a dry eye in the house—after nine seasons, Prue Leith has announced her exit as a judge on The Great British Bake Off. “Bake Off has been a fabulous part of my life for the last nine years, I have genuinely loved it and I’m sure I’ll miss working with my fellow judge Paul, Alison and Noel and the teams at Love Productions and Channel 4,” she posted to her Instagram account. “But now feels like the right time to step back (I’m 86 for goodness sake!), there’s so much I’d like to do, not least spend summers enjoying my garden,” she continues. “Whoever joins the team, I’m sure they’ll love it as much as I have. I feel very lucky to have been part of it,” she concludes.
Many former competitors commented on her post, expressing how much she’ll be missed and how much she helped guide them through their time on GBBO. “Thanks for the memories, encouragement and guidance Prue. It was incredible to be part of the show with you,” wrote 2023 winner Matty Edgell.
“We will miss you so much. It was a joy and privilege to be in the tent you,” commented Rahul Mandal, 2018 GBBO winner. But former contestants aren’t the only ones sad to see the legend leave the show. “You will be missed greatly but I’m glad you will have more time for yourself,” wrote one fan.
“It has been an aaaaabsolute pleasure to watch you all these years! Your wit and fashion will be dearly dearly missed,” commented another. “You are truly irreplaceable Prue,” another fan wrote.
One enthusiastic fan said, “IM GONNA MISS YOU SO MUCH YOU NATIONAL TREASURE YOU.” However, I think one iconic fan really summed up the thoughts of the masses: “Retirement denied. see you next season.”
It’s truly the end of an era and we wish Prue all the best in her well-earned time off.
